All About Lasik Eye Surgery

LASIK surgery is more popular than ever, especially with the latest developments that have made LASIK much safer than it was in the past.

LASIK surgery was invented by Jose Barraquer. In 1950, Dr. Barraquer of Columbia developed the procedure that cut small flaps in the cornea to reshape the eye, resulting in better vision, without glasses or contacts.

With the development and advances in the use of lasers, LASIK eye surgery and an industry has boomed in the last 10 years. More and more people are seeking the freedom of living life without the inconvenience of glasses and contacts.

The LASIK procedure is relatively painless. It is however, uncomfortable and can be frightening. The patient is awake during the surgery. The eyelids are held open with clamps while the ophthalmologist prepares the instruments. Once you are relatively comfortable the doctor proceeds to use the laser to cut and reshape the corneal lens.

Once the surgery is complete the patient is given post operation instructions. Recovery usually takes a couple weeks. The patient is sent home with dark glasses to protect the eye from light. He or she is also given an antibiotic eye drop and imitation tears to keep the eyes moist.

There are some known complications to the LASIK surgery, just like any kind of surgery. Some of these include chronic dry eyes, incorrect correction affecting visual acuity, infection, double vision, and blurry night vision.

As the LASIK surgery procedure improves the complications associated with the surgery will be less frequent. Advances are breaking out every year and within the next decade LASIK eye surgery or surgery similar to LASIK may become the standard correction for poor vision. While glasses and contacts will probably always be necessary, they may become the exception rather than the rule.

While it is gaining popularity, LASIK surgery is not for everyone, check with your ophthalmologist and he or she will advise you to whether you are a good candidate.
